Weekly Round-up: African record breakers and Springbok domination

In a week filled with breath-taking displays of athleticism, African athletes took the world stage by storm, leaving an indelible mark on the global sporting arena. The World Road Running Championships and the Rugby World Cup showcased the incredible talent and determination of these athletes, bringing honour and pride to their nations and the entire continent.

World Road Running Championships

African dominance was evident in the World Road Running Championships as Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes delivered remarkable performances, setting records and achieving personal bests.

In the Women’s 5km event, Beatrice Chebet of Kenya claimed the gold with a Championship record time of 14:35, closely followed by her compatriot Lilian Kasait Rengeruk, who achieved a personal best of 14:39. Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye secured the third position with a time of 14:40.

In the Men’s 5km race, Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet blazed through the course, setting a new Championship record with a staggering time of 12:59. Yomif Kejelcha, also from Ethiopia, finished second with a time of 13:02, while Nicholas Kipkorir of Kenya claimed the third spot with a time of 13:16.

The Women’s Road Mile witnessed history being made as Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji clocked in at 4:20.98, setting a new world record. Her compatriot Freweyni Hailu achieved a personal best with a time of 4:23.06, securing the second position, while Faith Kipyegon of Kenya finished third with a personal best time of 4:24.13.

The Half-Marathon events were equally electrifying, with Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya setting a Championships Record in the Women’s category with a time of 1:07:25. 

In the Women’s Team Half-Marathon standings, Kenya emerged victorious with a total time of 3:22:25, showcasing their exceptional teamwork and endurance.

 In the Men’s Half-Marathon, Sabastian Kimaru Sawe of Kenya set a Championship Record with a time of 59:10, leading his team to a triumphant victory in the Men’s Team Half-Marathon standings.

Rugby World Cup

In the Rugby World Cup, the Springboks showcased their formidable strength under the captaincy of Siya Kolisi, who marked his 50th test match for South Africa. With a resounding 49-18 victory over Tonga, they not only secured a crucial win but also solidified their spot to advance in the tournament. This crucial win secured South Africa’s ticket to advance in the tournament, further bolstering the nation’s rugby prowess on the global stage.
