The upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 is poised to be a thrilling testament to the prowess and passion of African women’s football. With Morocco set as the host nation, excitement brews among football enthusiasts eager to witness the continent’s top female footballing talent battle for glory.

The absence of the 2023 WAFCON has left South Africa as the reigning champions, a title earned from their triumphant campaign in 2022. Notably, their success in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup further solidifies their standing, having impressively reached the round of 16. This commendable performance underscores their current strong form, setting a promising stage for their potential defence of the championship title.

Morocco, as both the host nation and the 2022 WAFCON runners-up, enters the tournament with high expectations. Their impressive performance in the previous edition positions them as formidable contenders, benefitting from home advantage and eyeing the championship title.

Among the diverse array of participating nations, Nigeria stands out as a dominant force with an unparalleled record of 11 WAFCON titles. However, their most recent victory dates back to 2018. Despite finishing third in 2022, Nigeria remains resolute in their pursuit of reclaiming their former glory and adding another championship to their illustrious history.

Ghana, boasting a rich footballing heritage, holds their best performance as runners-up in 2006. With aspirations of reclaiming their former status as title contenders, Ghana enters the tournament aiming to make a strong impression.

Botswana, having reached the quarter-finals in 2022, seeks to build upon their previous success and elevate their performance in the upcoming tournament. Meanwhile, DR Congo, despite achieving third place in 1998, is determined to surpass past achievements and leave a lasting mark in this edition.

Tunisia and Senegal, both quarter-finalists in the previous edition, exhibit growing prowess and ambition as they aim to progress further in the tournament. Zambia, with a third-place finish in 2022, sets out to replicate or exceed their previous success on the continental stage.

Teams such as Tanzania and Mali, yet to progress beyond the group stages, enter the tournament with a hunger to break barriers and make a substantial impact. Algeria, despite never advancing beyond the group stage, seeks to challenge expectations and secure a standout performance in this edition.

The upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024 presents an enticing prospect for football fans across the continent. With each team bringing its unique blend of talent, determination, and ambition, the stage is set for a fiercely contested tournament that will captivate audiences and honour the best of African women’s football.
