I am known to be a climber type of rider or as my teammates would say – The breakaway man.
I started cycling by riding to school every day, when I was in Primary school. My uncle occasionally did some of the local road races and asked that I join him. I started training for these races very religiously. When one day on my way back from my ride turning off into Broadacres, the Cycle Lab Youth Academy training group rode past me and I immediately jumped on. It’s safe to say that I gave them a bit of a hard time and made some what of a mark because soon after I was invited to go on a cycling training camp with them. And that’s where it all started for me.
Eventually I joined the Youth Academy Team. The team consisted of the prominent Louis Meintjes (NTT PRO CYCLING – WT) was one of my teammates at the time – Needless to say we were very successful. When I was a first year Junior we went to Europe where we took part in several Nations Cups and local classics. In my second year as a Junior rider joined the first ever A[S]G cycling Team with the late, Adam Reyneke.
I had a very successful two years of racing as a Junior rider, I won my very first South African National Time Trial in my age category, then went on to finish 2nd in the South African National Road Race that same year. The team and I dominated the local scene that year!
Thereafter, as an U23 rider I went to Spain to race with the Caja Rural Team, a Spanish Team. I was thrown into the deep to see whether I would sink or swim. This opportunity enabled me to see what I had to do in order to make a success of racing and living in Europe.
In 2013, I was proudly selected to represent South African National Team that took part in the Mzansi Tour – The National team included the likes of Robbie Hunter, the first South African Cyclist whom competed in the Tour de France the World’s most prestigious race! This was a really great experience for me as a up and coming young cyclist. Robbie was the Overall Winner of the Tour and I was fortunate enough to be part of the team that won.
2013 Was also the year I signed a contract with Bonitas Pro-Cycling led by former Pro Cyclist, Malcolm Lange. During the 2014 and 2015 cycling season I formed part of the Europcar Pro Cycling Team. I made a bold move to join a French Cycling Club for a 3-month stint in the hopes of developing myself even further. I spent most of the year in France and literally put everything on the line which proved to be more challenging than anything else I’ve taken on, however I used this to motivate me my pursuit to make a great success of my cycling passion.
I have been part of the ProTouch brotherhood since the team started in 2017 – I haven’t once regretted my decision. I am grateful to be part of this amazing initiative that supports and enables athletes to perform at their optimum on the International stage. We have made an incredible mark on the local scene and we are determined to do the same on when racing abroad!
