MITCH ELIOT – My Story – PART 1

by | Apr 6, 2020 | Mitch Eliot, Team Protouch

I am a 23year old Professional Cyclist, riding for Team ProTouch – the South African, UCI-registered Number 1 Continental Team in Africa.

I am a climber and I often play the supporting role to assist my team mates when the need arises. I tend to do well on more puncheur terrains, where I can put my abilities to the test.

“You can be born talented but, there is always someone working and training harder than you and, at the end of the day he will succeed.”

HERE IS MY STORY – My dad introduced me to cycling  in 2013 – firstly to mountain biking and soon after moving onto a road bike. I won my first race as an U16 rider for the MTN Qhubeka Academy and from then on, I knew that I wanted to be out riding a bike and that I was not made to sit behind a desk.

In 2016, I took part in the Clover Lowveld Tour in Mpumalanga. I won the first stage by over 4 minutes, to my competitors Clint Hendricks (Bike Aid) and Willie Smit (Burgos-BH).  The tour went extremely well as I was leading the King of the Mountains and Best Young Rider competitions for the first four stages, and going into the fifth and final stage and, 2nd Overall on GC by only a few seconds to Willie Smit.

Unfortunately, I had a freak accident halfway through the final stage when I hit a pothole approaching a descend, going over 80kmph – And that was the end of the tour for me.

I spent the next ten days in ICU, and now, after numerous amounts of surgeries it has been a challenge to make my way back onto the bike but, this was not going to stop me in my dream of becoming a Professional Cyclist. In 2017, I reclaimed my Best Young Rider Jersey at Clover Tour, as well as at the Tour de Windhoek and Tour De Maurice.

Teamwork and supporting my team has been my focus for the 2018 and 2019 season: All the hard work had paid off when we concluded the Tour of Mpumalanga in 2nd place Overall on General Classification. The cherry on the cake was winning the inaugural Tour de Limpopo – SA’s first UCI 2.2 Tour. 2018 was a great year for Team ProTouch, as we ended off the season taking the overall series, in the Support SA Talent Road Cycling Series.

In 2019, after registering a Continental Team, I had the opportunity of racing with my team at the UCI 2.1 Tropicale Amissa Bongo, Gabon,  Tour d’Indonesia and Tour of China and Binzhou in China as well as Tour of Peninsula, Malaysia. It was a privilege to be part of the Team and finished off with these notable results:

  • TOUR OF GOOD HOPE – UCI 2.2 – 382,6 KM – Stage 1 – 13th Place (Elite); Stage 4 – 9th Place (Elite)
  • TOUR D’INDONESIA – UCI 2.1 – 817,6 KM – Part of Winning Team that completed Stage 1 – 12th Place; Stage 3 – 15th Place and winning Sprinters Classification
  • TOUR OF CHINA I – UCI 2.1 – 1116,9 KM – Part of the Team that finished with Stage 1 – 7th Place; Stage 3 – 4thPlace; Stage 5 – 3rd Place; Points Classification – 5th Place
