The World Athletics Championships provided a platform for numerous talented African athletes to showcase their skills and make their mark on the global stage. Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Morocco, Botswana, Burkina Faso, and South Africa participated in the event, with athletes from these countries achieving impressive results.
Kenya
Kenya stood out with their exceptional performance, winning ten medals. Faith Kipyegon made history by becoming the first woman to win gold in 5,000m and 1,500m events at a single World Athletics Championships. Mary Moraa secured a gold medal in the Women’s 800m. Beatrice Chebet won a bronze in the Women’s 5000m and a silver in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase. Daniel Simu Ebenyo claimed silver in the Men’s 10000m, while Emmanuel Wanyonyi won a silver medal in the Men’s 800m.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia also made a strong impact with nine medals. Gudaf Tsegay secured gold in the 10000m, while Letsenbet Gidey and Ejgayehu Taye won silver and bronze in the same event. Amane Beriso Shankule won gold in the Women’s Marathon. Diribe Welteji earned a silver medal in the Women’s 1500m. Selemon Barega claimed bronze in the Men’s 10000m, and Lamecha Girma won silver in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase.
Uganda
Uganda faced challenges but secured two medals, with Joshua Cheptegei winning gold in the Men’s 10000m and Victor Kiplangat winning gold in the Men’s Marathon.
Morocco
Morocco earned two medals, with Soufiane El Bakkali winning gold in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase, while Fatima Gardadi claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s Marathon.
Botswana
Botswana had a modest performance, securing two medals through Letsile Tebogo, who won silver in the Men’s 100m and bronze in the Men’s 200m. Letsile Tebogo’s achievement was notable as he became the youngest athlete to accomplish this double medal feat in these events.
Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso celebrated their success with a gold medal from Hugues Fabrice Zango in the Men’s Triple Jump. Zango is known for breaking records and excelling in his field, and his achievements added to his impressive track record.
South Africa
South Africa, unfortunately, did not manage to secure any medals during the Championships.
Overall, African athletes showcased their prowess and determination, breaking records and achieving remarkable feats across various events at the World Athletics Championships.
