AFCON headers an epic week of sport

The past week of African sporting events was filled with moments of sheer brilliance and unwavering determination across various competitions, including the Africa cup of Nations, the World Aquatics Championships, and the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.

On Sunday, February 11th, 2023, Ivory Coast, the hosts of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, clinched the coveted title of champions of Africa in front of their home supporters. They secured victory by defeating runners up Nigeria 2-1 in a thrilling final.

Saturday, February 10th, saw South Africa claim the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations, with Bafana Bafana emerging victorious in a tense penalty shoot-out against fourth place DR Congo, securing a 6-5 win.

From February 12th to 15th, the World Para Athletics Grand Prix showcased the talents of athletes from around the world, as they vied for top honours on the podium. Among them, South Africa’s Sheryl James demonstrated her exceptional running abilities, clinching the silver medal in the 200m event.

In the realm of aquatics, on February 14th, Tayla Jonker made a significant impact at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha. Jonker’s remarkable performance in the 50m backstroke event, where she finished with a time of 28.37 seconds, not only broke the South African record but also earned her a spot in the semi-finals. However, she finished 15th in the semi-finals, concluding her journey in the championships.

Meanwhile, on February 11th, Erin Gallagher of South Africa made headlines in the swimming world by shattering the African record for the 100m Butterfly, clocking in at 57.59 seconds and securing her place in the final. Despite finishing seventh in the final race, Gallagher’s achievements stand as a testament to her remarkable talent and dedication to the sport.

On February 11th, Egypt’s Sara Samir made waves in the weightlifting world in the 81kg category, securing her ninth continental title. She achieved this remarkable feat by successfully completing five lifts, totalling 113-140-253.
