Los Angeles Sevens ignites a week of thrilling sports action

A riveting week of sports awaits, featuring electrifying Sevens rugby, athletic prowess at the World Indoor Athletics Championships, the prestigious Tokyo Marathon, and the kick-off of the highly anticipated African Games.

World Indoor Athletics Championships: March 1-3

The final entry lists confirm a staggering 651 athletes from 133 teams ready to compete on the global stage from March 1st to the 3rd. Among them, 18 gold medallists from the previous championships will vie for another shot at glory in Glasgow.


African athletes shine among the list of gold medallists to watch:

• Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, a two-time World Indoor Athletics medallist, clinched gold in the 1500m in 2022 and bronze in 2016.
• Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega, also a two-time medallist, secured gold in the 3000m Short Track in 2022 and silver in 2018.

Sevens Series: March 2-3 in Los Angeles

South Africa’s men’s and women’s teams represent the African continent in the series from March 2nd to the 3rd.

The women’s team currently holds 12th place in the overall standings with eight points, trailing Japan by four points (12 points).

The men’s team sits sixth in the standings with 46 points, just one point behind Australia (47 points) and ten points ahead of France (36 points).

The upcoming Los Angeles Sevens series holds great significance as the top eight teams in cumulative series points after the seventh round in Singapore will secure a spot in the ‘winner takes all’ Grand Final in Madrid, where the HSBC Sevens 2024 champions will be crowned.

Tokyo Marathon: March 2

The Tokyo Marathon, a prestigious World Athletics Platinum Label event and one of the six World Marathon Majors, attracts elite athletes from around the globe on March 2nd.

In the 2023 edition, Ethiopia’s Deso Gelmisa claimed victory in the Men’s Marathon with a time of 2:05:22, while Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjiru dominated the Women’s Marathon in 2:16:28.

African Games: March 3-10

The 13th edition of the African Games begins with an exhilarating start as Table Tennis and Badminton events set the stage for the official commencement on March 8th. From March 3rd to the 10th, athletes will showcase their skills and determination in these sports, vying for glory and national pride.

As competitors from across the continent converge, anticipation runs high for the intense competition and memorable performances that will unfold in this celebration of African athleticism.
