An electrifying week of sports wrapped up with African athletes making their mark on the global stage across various events including the Tour du Rwanda, Vancouver Sevens, and the 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers.
Tour du Rwanda
The Tour du Rwanda culminated on a high note as African cyclists showcased their prowess in Stages 6, 7, and 8 from March 23rd to 25th.
Stage 6 – March 23rd: Eritrean cyclist Aklilu Arefayne clinched both the Best Young Rider and Best Young African jerseys, while compatriot Dawit Yemane secured the Best African Jersey. Rwandan cyclists Vaincaire Masengesho and Eric Manizabayo also distinguished themselves with jersey wins.
Stage 7 – March 24th: Arefayne maintained his dominance, securing the same jerseys as in Stage 6, with Yemane once again claiming the Best African Jersey. Masengesho, Manizabayo, and Didier Munyaneza continued Rwanda’s impressive performance with additional jersey victories.
Stage 8 – March 25th: Arefayne continued his remarkable streak, clinching the same jerseys once more, while Yemane secured the Best African Jersey yet again. Rwandan cyclists Masengesho, Manizabayo, and Shemu Nsengiyumva also added to their haul in this final stage.
Vancouver Sevens:
From February 23rd to 26th, the Vancouver Sevens captivated rugby enthusiasts worldwide. The South African Men’s Sevens team claimed 9th place after defeating Australia 24-7. Meanwhile, the South African Women’s Sevens team faced tough competition, ultimately losing 5-12 to Great Britain in the 11th place play-off.
2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers:
From February 23rd to 25th, the 2025 AfroBasket Qualifiers for Groups B, D, and E set the basketball world alight. Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia emerged as group leaders, each securing six points by winning all three of their games.
2024 UCI Africa Tour Rankings:
In cycling, the February standings of the 2024 UCI Africa Tour revealed Eritrea leading the Men’s Nations rankings with 2507 points, with Biniam Girmay topping the individual rankings with 858 points.
Meanwhile, South Africa led the Women’s Nations rankings with 1870 points, with Ashleigh Moolman Pasio securing the individual top spot with 1486 points.
