From the resounding victories at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships to the intense battles in the Women’s Proteas T20I series against Sri Lanka and the spirited kick-off of the Hong Kong HSBC SVNS series
2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships
Taking centre stage in Belgrade, Serbia, on 30th March, the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships set the tone for a week of outstanding performances.
Athletes from around the globe competed in a variety of distances, with the Senior men and women covering approximately 10 km, Junior men navigating an 8 km course, Junior women tackling a 6 km route, and the Mixed relay team navigating 4×2 km segments.
In the Junior Men’s division, Kenya’s Samuel Kibathi clinched the gold medal with an exceptional time of 22:40, showcasing remarkable talent and determination over the 8 km course. Similarly, Ethiopia’s Marta Alemayo emerged victorious in the Junior Women’s division, securing gold with an impressive time of 19:28 across the 6 km route.
Team excellence was on full display as Kenya dominated the team standings, securing gold in both the Junior Men’s (score of 15) and Junior Women’s (score of 12) categories. The Relay Mixed division witnessed Kenya’s prowess once again, claiming gold with a stellar time of 22:15 across the 4×2 km segments.
In the Senior divisions, the challenges were greater yet met with equal fervour. Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo conquered the 10 km course, securing gold with a remarkable time of 28:09 in the Men’s division. Meanwhile, Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet showcased her mastery in the Women’s division, clinching gold with an impressive time of 31:05.
Kenya continued its reign in team standings, securing gold in both the Men’s (score of 19) and Women’s (score of 10) Senior categories, demonstrating a consistent display of excellence across all levels of competition.
T20I Women’s Proteas vs Sri Lanka
The Women’s Proteas engaged in a captivating T20I series against Sri Lanka, on the 27th of March. The series, spanning three matches, delivered moments of brilliance and intense competition.
The first clash saw South Africa assert their dominance, securing a commanding victory over Sri Lanka by 79 runs. Laura Wolvaardt stole the spotlight with a spectacular performance, amassing 102 runs off 63 balls and guiding her team to victory.
The second clash on the 30th of March saw Sri Lanka bounce back, defeating the Proteas by seven wickets. Sri Lanka clinched the series with a hard-fought victory, triumphing over South Africa by four wickets in a thrilling encounter, held on the 3rd of April.
HSBC SVNS Hong Kong
The Hong Kong HSBC SVNS series ignited excitement and fervour among rugby enthusiasts, showcasing electrifying matches and captivating performances.
The Blitzboks kicked off their tour in spectacular fashion, securing victories against Ireland 22-17 and Spain 24-10 in gripping encounters. However, the Women Boks faced challenges early on, suffering defeats against Ireland 20-7 and Fiji 24-7 in hard-fought battles.
