The Spar Proteas, South Africa’s national netball team, exhibited an unyielding fighting spirit throughout the Netball World Cup. Their journey was a roller-coaster ride of triumphs and heartaches.

 

Notable victories against Wales, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, and Tonga showcased their prowess on the court. A memorable draw against New Zealand (48-48) underscored their resilience. Zimbabwe’s national netball team, the Gems, faced an uphill battle. Despite a challenging opening match against Australia, the Gems demonstrated their mettle by securing crucial victories over Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Barbados.

 

Their perseverance culminated in a dominant win over Barbados (75-48) in the 13/14 place play-off, securing the 13th position in the tournament. The Gems’ performance showcased their potential for growth and future success.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

 

South Africa made history at the FIFA World Cup, claiming their first-ever tournament win and securing their first-ever spot in the round of 16. They achieved this historic advancement after a nail-biting clash with Italy, where Banyana Banyana triumphed with a 3-2 victory.

 

Nigeria showcased their footballing prowess, delivering invigorating matches, including an upset victory over co-host nation Australia, one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

Ashleigh Moolman Pasio

 

South Africa’s Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio achieved a commendable sixth-place finish in the Women’s Tour de France, a testament to her remarkable performance and determination.

 

Competing under the banner of AG Insurance-Soudal-Quick-Step, Moolman-Pasio completed the gruelling race in 25 hours, 38 minutes, and 57 seconds. Her effort placed her a mere five minutes and 21 seconds behind the triumphant race leader, Demi Vollering of the Netherlands.

 

Although Moolman-Pasio had entered the concluding day’s time trial holding the fifth position overall, her hopes were slightly dashed as the 22.6km trial unfolded. She concluded the trial with 29 minutes and 15 seconds, trailing the stage winner Marlen Reusser from Switzerland, by 2 minutes and 52 seconds.

 

Despite this setback, the tour’s entirety was a triumph for Moolman-Pasio. Her exceptional consistency was evident as she secured second place in the points classification, amassing an impressive 153 points.

Nigeria’s Triumph in Women’s Basketball

 

The Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, clinched the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket championship by defeating Senegal 84-74 in the final. This victory marked their fourth consecutive championship.
