UCI Cycling World Championships: South Africa leads the African charge in Scotland

In just a few days, Glasgow, Scotland, will host the highly anticipated 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. From the 3rd to the 13th of August, over 2600 athletes worldwide will gather to compete for more than 200 coveted rainbow jerseys in various cycling disciplines. Team South Africa stands tall among the contenders with a talented roster of riders ready to make their mark on the global stage.

 

The South African squad boasts diverse cycling talents across different events, including Para-cycling, Mountain Bike Cross-Country, BMX Racing, and BMX Freestyle.

 

In the Para-cycling events, Pieter du Preez and Goldy Fuchs will be representing the nation, aiming for podium finishes in both the Individual Time Trial (ITT) on the 9th and 10th of August, as well as the Road Race on the 12th of August.

 

The Mountain Bike Cross-Country event will see South Africa’s elite riders Alan Hatherly and Candice Lill competing in the Men’s and Women’s Elite categories, respectively, on the 12th of August. At the same time, experienced rider Sarah Hill will compete in the Elite Women’s Mountain Bike Cross Country event on the 6th of August.

 

Additionally, the Men’s U23 category will feature talented youngsters Johan Van Zyl, Luke Moir, Matthew Scott, Unathi Nxumalo, and Jaedon Terlouw, competing on the 11th of August.

 

Travis Stedman, Dillon Geary, and Tiano Da Silva will be among the Men’s U23 riders, competing in the Time Trial and Road Race events. The Time Trial will occur on the 9th, and the Road Race on the 12th.

 

Tyler Jacobs will lead South Africa’s charge in the Women’s U23 category on the 11th of August.

 

In the thrilling BMX Racing event, Miyanda Maseti, Tyler Klumper, and Monqoba Madida will showcase their skills on the 12th and 13th of August. The BMX Freestyle events will feature Vincent Leygonie and Jenna Byrnes, entertaining the audience from the 5th to the 12th of August.

 

Jean Spies and Wikus Johannes Myburgh are South Africa’s Track Team representatives, competing on the 3rd of August.

 

The Time Trial and Road Race events will see South Africa’s most accomplished cyclists taking on formidable competition. The Men’s Elite category will be represented by Daryl Impey, Ryan Gibbons, Callum Ormiston, and Morne Van Niekerk on the 6th and 11th of August. The Road Race will occur on the 6th and the Time Trial on the 11th.

 

The Women’s Elite and U23 Time Trial and Road Race will be headlined by Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, Frances Janse Van Rensburg, Hayley Preen, Tiffany Keep, Maude Le Roux, and Zanri Rossouw, competing on the 10th and 13th of August. The Time Trial will occur on the 10th, and the Road Race on the 13th.

 

Not forgetting the Junior category, Ernest Roets, Massi Ambrosi, and Omar Wilson will lead the charge in the Men’s category. At the same time, Lilian Baber will represent South Africa in the Junior Women’s category, all competing on the 10th of August.

 

For the Junior Men’s Time Trial and Road Race events, Jose Kleinsmit and Ryno Schutte will participate on the 5th and 11th of August. The Road Race will occur on the 5th, and the Time Trial on the 11th.

 

Annika Visser will be the sole representative for the Women’s Junior Time Trial and Road Race on the 5th and 10th of August. The Road Race will occur on the 5th, and the Time Trial on the 10th.

 

 

South Africa’s cycling talent is undoubtedly displayed at the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships. With riders vying for the rainbow jerseys in various disciplines, all eyes will be on Glasgow as the nation’s cyclists seek to make their mark in the world of competitive cycling.
