In the dynamic realm of international sports, recent competitions have showcased Africa’s sporting prowess across diverse disciplines. From the courts of netball to the fields of soccer and the exhilarating world of cycling, African athletes have left an indelible mark on the global stage.

 

Netball World Cup

 

The Spar Proteas from South Africa secured a 6th place finish in the Netball World Cup. This ranking was determined following their closely contested match against Uganda, in which they lost 49-47 in the 5/6 place play-off held on August 6th.

 

The She Cranes of Uganda clinched the 5th spot in the Netball World Cup standings. Their position was solidified after narrowly defeating South Africa with a score of 49-47 in the 5/6 place play-off on August 6th.

 

The Malawi Queens achieved a 7th place ranking in the Netball World Cup. They secured this position through a confident victory of 64-54 against Tonga in the 7/8 place play-off on August 6th.

 

Zimbabwe’s team, known as The Gems, claimed the 13th position in the Netball World Cup standings. They earned this standing by securing a dominant 75-48 win over Barbados in the 13/14 place play-offs match on August 4th.

 

FIFA Women’s World Cup

 

Banyana Banyana of South Africa made history by reaching the round of 16 for the first time in a FIFA Women’s World Cup. Their journey, however, ended as they faced a 2-0 defeat against the 9th-ranked Netherlands on August 7th.

 

 

The Super Falcons of Nigeria fought valiantly to reach the round of 16 but couldn’t maintain their momentum, losing 4-2 on penalties to the 4th-ranked England earlier today.

 

 

Morocco remains the sole African team in the tournament, set to face France in the upcoming round of 16 matches tomorrow.

 

Rugby World Cup warm-up

 

In a game that played out in two halves, the Springboks triumphed over Argentina on August 5th, securing a confident 24-13 victory against the Los Pumas, in Argentina.

 

 

Commonwealth Youth Games

 

The Commonwealth Youth Games have brought excitement, with Africa claiming several medals. South African athlete Jessica Thompson earned gold in the Women’s 50m Butterfly event. Another South African, Miles Liebenberg, showcased his cycling prowess by winning the ITT Junior Men’s gold medal.

 

UCI Cycling World Championships

 

The UCI Cycling World Championships have been a thrilling talent showcase featuring various events. South African cyclist Candice Lill demonstrated her Women’s MTB Cross-Country Marathon skills, securing the silver medal.
