AFCON Qualifiers: The fight for AFCON 2024

Fierce competition, dramatic victories, and heart-breaking defeats have marked the journey to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024. As the dust settles and the blow of the final whistle, the qualification landscape becomes focused, revealing the teams that will be honoured to represent their nations on the grand stage of African football.

Group A 

Nigeria finished first on 15 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Nigeria ended their qualifiers on a high note after dismantling Sao Tome and Principe with a dominant 6-0 win. AFCON Qualifiers top goal scorer, Victor Osimhen, showcased his brilliance by scoring a hat-trick.

Guinea-Bissau finished second on 13 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Guinea Bissau finished their qualifiers in good stride after defeating Sierra Leone 2-1. 

Sierra Leone finished in third place with 5 points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024. 

Sao Tome and Principe finished in fourth place with one point, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group B

Burkina Faso finished first on 11 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Burkina Faso finished the qualifiers in good stride, holding Eswatini to a draw, giving them the extra point needed to claim the top spot. 

Cape Verde finished second place on 10 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Cape Verde finished their qualifiers with a 2-1 loss to Togo. Despite this loss, Cape Verde had enough points to qualify. 

Togo finished in third place on eight points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Eswatini finished fourth on three points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group C

Cameroon finished first on seven points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Cameroon finished their qualifiers well, with a 3-0 win over Burundi.ย 

Namibia finished second on five points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. They played their last qualifier on the 20th of June, where they lost 3-2 to Burundi. However, this loss was insufficient to knock them out of AFCON 2024. 

Burundi finished in third place on four points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Kenya was disqualified from the qualifiers and AFCON 2024 due to the suspension of the Kenya Football Association by FIFA. 

Group D 

Egypt finished first on 15 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Egypt ended on a high note after defeating Ethiopia 1-0 to solidify their top spot.  

Guinea finished second place on 10 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Guinea ended their qualifiers off with a 2-2 draw against Malawi.  

Malawi finished in third place on five points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Ethiopia finished fourth place on four points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group E 

Ghana finished first with 12 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Ghana finished their qualifiers well by defeating Central African Republic 2-1, giving them the top spot. 

Angola finished second on nine points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. They finished off their qualifiers comfortably after a goalless draw against Madagascar. 

Central African Republic finished in third place on seven points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Madagascar finished in fourth place on three points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group F

Algeria finished first on 16 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Algeria finished off their qualifiers comfortably with a goalless draw against Tanzania.ย 

Tanzania finished second on eight points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024.

Uganda finished in third place on seven points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024. Despite not making AFCON 2024, they ended their qualifiers on a high note with a confident 2-0 win over Niger. 

Niger finished in fourth place on two points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group G

Mali finished first on 15 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Mali finished their qualifiers in style with a confident 4-0 win over South Sudan. 

Gambia finished second on 10 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Gambia successfully ended their qualifiers with a 2-2 draw against Congo, giving them enough points to claim qualification. 

Congo finished in third place on seven points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

South Sudan finished fourth place on three points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group H

Zambia finished in first place on 13 points, with their six Goal Difference giving them the extra push to claim the top spot over Ivory Coast, giving them their qualification for AFCON 2024.  Zambia finished their qualifiers comfortably after a 1-1 draw with Comoros. 

Ivory Coast finished in second place on 13 points, with their four-goal difference being too little to surpass Zambia, giving them their qualification for AFCON 2024. Ivory Coast finished their qualifiers confidently after a decisive 1-0 win over Lesotho.ย 

Comoros finished in third place on seven points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Lesotho finished in fourth place with one point, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group I

DR Congo finished first with 12 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. They finished their qualifiers well after a confident 2-0 over Sudan. 

Mauritania finished in second place on 10 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Mauritania finished their qualifiers on a challenging note after narrowly defeating Gabon 2-1, with both sides receiving red cards.  

Gabon finished in third place on seven points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Sudan finished in fourth place on six points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group J

Tunisia finished in first place on 13 points, with their 10-goal difference giving them the extra push to claim the top spot over Equatorial Guinea, giving them their qualification for AFCON 2024. Tunisia ended their qualifiers with a confident 3-0 win over Botswana. 

Equatorial Guinea finished in second with 13 points, with their two two-goal difference being too little to surpass Tunisia, giving them their qualification for AFCON 2024. Equatorial Guinea ended their qualifiers comfortably after they drew 1-1 with Libya. 

Botswana finished in third place on four points, with having three goals for them being the difference to push past Libya, resulting in them missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Libya finished in fourth place on four points, with two goals being too few for them to surpass Botswana, resulting in them missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Group K 

South Africa is currently in first place on seven points, giving them their qualification for AFCON 2024. However, the top spot is still up for grabs as Morocco is yet to play. South Africa played their last qualifier match on the 17th of June, where they defeated Morocco 2-1. 

Morocco is currently in second place with six points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. However, they are yet to play Liberia due to the devastating earthquake in Morocco, which postponed the match. 

Liberia is currently in third place on one point, despite still having one more game. The points difference between Liberia and Morocco is too big, making it impossible for Liberia to climb any higher, resulting in them missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Zimbabwe was disqualified from the qualifiers and AFCON 2024 due to the suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association by FIFA. 

Group L 

Senegal finished first on 14 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Senegal ended their qualifiers comfortably after a 1-1 draw with Rwanda. 

Mozambique finished second on 10 points, qualifying them for AFCON 2024. Mozambique ended their qualifiers with a narrow 3-2 win over Benin. 

Benin finished in third place on five points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.

Rwanda finished in fourth place on three points, missing their qualification for AFCON 2024.
