In a momentous turn of events, the African football landscape is set to witness a ground-breaking competition as the African Football League prepares to kick off.

Originally announced by the continental football governing body, CAF, in August 2022, the league, formerly known as the African Super League, has finally come to fruition after several delays, promising an exhilarating journey for fans and players alike.

A Unique line-up: The elite eight

Eight formidable teams have emerged as the chosen contenders for this inaugural edition of the African Football League. These teams, carefully selected from the top-ranked leagues across the continent, represent the pinnacle of African football prowess.

Among the chosen few is South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, the sole representative from the Premier Soccer League. This selection, while a triumph for Sundowns, means that traditional giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will have to wait for their shot at glory.

The elite line-up also includes Egyptian powerhouses Al Ahly, Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, Tunisia’s Esperance, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria’s Enyimba Football Club, Tanzania’s Simba SC, and Petro Atletico from Angola. These clubs bring with them a legacy of excellence and a hunger for victory, promising fans a spectacle of top-tier football.

Unprecedented financial rewards

Aside from the honour and prestige associated with clinching the title, the African Football League brings with it a significant financial windfall for the participating teams. Each team is guaranteed a substantial $1 million, providing a boost to their resources and furthering the growth of football infrastructure in their respective countries.

The stakes rise higher as teams progress through the competition. Semi-finalists will receive $1.7 million, while the runners-up will walk away with a hefty $3 million. The ultimate victors, the champions of the African Football League, will be rewarded with a remarkable $4 million, solidifying their status as the best on the continent.

Thrilling Format and Key Dates

The competition will unfold in a knockout format, comprising of quarterfinals, semi-finals, and a grand final. Each round will be contested over two legs, with the away goal rule adding an extra layer of intensity to the matches. In the event of a draw after the conclusion of the second leg in the quarterfinals or semi-finals, the tie will be decided by a nail-biting penalty shootout.

The eagerly anticipated semi-finals are scheduled for October 29 (first leg) and November 1 (second leg), promising fans nail-biting action and unforgettable moments. The stakes reach their peak with the final, set to captivate audiences on November 5 (first leg) and culminate in a grand finale on November 11 (second leg).

Moreover, to ensure fairness and accuracy, the league will utilize VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology, adding a modern touch to the competition.

A bright future for African football

As the African Football League makes its debut, it heralds a new era for football on the continent. With unparalleled financial incentives, a stellar line-up of teams, and a format designed to keep fans on the edge of their seats, this competition promises to raise the bar for African football.

Beyond the immediate thrill of the matches, the league will catapult the growth of football infrastructure, talent development, and fan engagement across Africa. As the tournament unfolds, it will undoubtedly inspire future generations of footballers and fans, cementing Africa’s place on the global football stage.
