AFCON finals cap off an exciting sporting week

Sports enthusiasts are in for an exhilarating week as the World Aquatics Championships continue to captivate audiences in Doha, coupled with the thrilling conclusion of the 2023 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

The World Aquatics Championships are currently unfolding, with teams and athletes worldwide competing for a coveted spot on the podium. The tournament is set to conclude on February 18th in Doha, showcasing a diverse range of solo and team events, including water polo, diving, and racing.

The AFCON Semi-finals kick off on Wednesday, February 7th, with Nigeria facing South Africa at 19:00 (CAT), and Ivory Coast taking on DR Congo. The matches will be hosted at Stade Bouaké in Bouaké and the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in Ebimpé and Anyama, northern Abidjan, respectively.

Nigeria secured their spot in the semi-finals after defeating Angola 1-0, with a 41st-minute goal from standout player Ademola Lookman. South Africa earned their place in the semi-final after a dramatic showdown with Cape Verde, featuring four penalty saves from the Bafana Bafana captain, Ronwen Williams, during the penalty shootout.

Ivory Coast advanced to the semi-final after a thrilling encounter against Mali, sealed with a late, dying goal in extra time from Oumar Diakité. Meanwhile, DR Congo secured their spot in the semi-finals in dominant fashion after defeating Guinea 3-1.

All four teams are vying for a spot in the final showdown on Sunday, February 11th, at 22:00 (CAT). The other two teams will compete in the third-fourth place playoffs on Saturday, February 10th, at 22:00 (CAT).
The final will be held at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé in Ebimpé and Anyama, while the third-fourth place playoff is scheduled for Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan.
