Weekly round-up: Basketball fever & FIFA firestorms collide

The past week bore witness to exhilarating showdowns, both on the basketball court and the football pitch. It was a showcase of incredible talent on the Road to Bal 2024, with nail-biting match-ups in the FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers, and more.

Road to Bal 2024: Group Phase E

Fans were treated to an absolute spectacle of basketball during the Road to Bal 2024. Amongst the sides showcasing exceptional skills, only four secured their spots in the semi-finals: City Oilers, Dynamo, Cape Town Tigers, and C.O.S.P.N.

Tomorrow, on the 25th of November, the City Oilers will clash with Dynamo. Despite NBA Academy Africa finishing second in Group A, City Oilers claimed the top spot in Group B. Dynamo secured their semi-final berth after finishing third in Group A.

Cape Town Tigers are poised to face C.O.S.P.N also on the 25th of November. Cape Town Tigers dominated Group A to claim the top spot, while C.O.S.P.N secured the second spot.

FIFA World Cup African qualifiers

The intense qualifier period from the 15th to the 21st of November delivered a week of football excellence. Several teams stood out, claiming the top spot in their respective groups.

Egypt emerged as the Group A powerhouse, holding a slender two-point lead over Burkina Faso. In Group B, Senegal leads the pack, narrowly ahead of Sudan by a three-goal difference. Rwanda claimed first place in Group C by defeating South Africa 2-0, edging past South Africa by a single point.

Cameroon leads Group D, just ahead of Cape Verde by a solitary goal difference. Morocco, despite having played only one game, tops Group E, narrowly leading Zambia by a single goal difference. Ivory Coast dominates Group F, holding a significant nine-goal difference over Gabon.

In Group G, Alegria leads ahead of Botswana by three points. Tunisia holds the top spot in Group H, with a three-goal difference over Equatorial Guinea. Lastly, Comoros sits atop Group I, two points ahead of Mali.

The qualifiers will go into their next phase on the 3rd of June 2024.

CAF Women’s Champions League 

In the CAF Women’s Champions League Final held on Sunday, the 19th of November, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns secured victory against Morocco’s Sporting Casablanca with a triumphant three-goal performance. Refilwe Tholakele showcased an impressive performance, scoring two goals, while Boitumelo Rabale contributed one goal to clinch Sundowns’ win.
